Oh, the Things They’ll Say

My mom and I have a lot in common. We’re about the same height (I’m just a little taller, right, Mom?), have similar features, and even have similar voices. Every now and then—sometimes to Jacob, sometimes in conversation with other moms—I’ll hear my mom coming out of my mouth. I usually agree with her on the parenting front, so this is just funny to me. Okay, and a little creepy.

With a boundary-pushing toddler to care for, I say the same three or four things about a zillion times a day. In the more frustrating moments, I look forward to the moments if and when Jacob has kids, when he’ll say these things to them.

“I’m not going to say this again.”

“There’s no arguing, crying, screaming, or yelling.”

“I’m not arguing about this.”

“I’m not doing this right now.”

“You can either do what I asked you to do or you can sit in a time out. Which do you choose?”

Hopefully there’s something he hears more often that will stick with him a little more. It’s embedded in all the others, but probably doesn’t seem that way to him. It sounds something like,

“I love you.”

Which, for the record, is something I learned from my mom, too.

  1. I do the same thing, all.the.time! It’s great when you LIKE the fact that you sound like your mom… so thankful it’s not the other way around
