Our Little Animal

The advent of Jacob’s sitting and crawling is bringing about some changes in our home.  Although he can’t get into a sitting position on his own yet, he is increasingly more content to sit that way and play when I plop him on a blanket.  In fact, I’m beginning to think he’s forgotten how to get back on his belly after he’s been sitting for a time.  But the little man has a lot to learn every day, so who can blame him?

At around four months, when we moved Jacob’s sleeping arrangements from our room to his bedroom, I expected to get sentimental about this first big change in our life as a family.  But because we made the move when it needed to happen, not based on any arbitrary logic or prescription, I felt ready and excited for it.  I took down the co-sleeper myself (which was extra tricky because I was not the one who assembled it), and remain grateful that I don’t have to crawl to the end of the bed to get in and out anymore.

Thankfully, I also felt ready and excited for the change we made this past weekend—moving the crib mattress to a lower position.  Here’s the before:

And here’s the after:

Looks much safer now, right?  This way we won’t learn that he can pull himself up to stand by having him flip out of the crib, which is one of a parent’s top goals, I’d say.

My only hesitation is that the crib looks a whole lot more like a cage in a zoo now.  I’m starting to rethink the nursery jungle animal theme.
